International Day of Education

On January 24, 2025, the United Community Education Foundation (UCEF) commemorated the International Day of Education in collaboration with students from the University of Ghana, Legon, and His Majesty Academy. The event featured an open forum discussion on the theme: “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

This engaging and impactful session brought together approximately 80 young people who shared their perspectives on the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence—particularly its role in assisting with academic assignments and learning. UCEF facilitated interactive sessions with resource persons from diverse fields, including academia, health, information technology, and diplomacy. Together, they explored the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in education and beyond.

Key Takeaways:

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in our daily lives, preserving our cultural identity remains essential. While AI can perform tasks and offer convenience, it cannot replicate the richness of human tradition. Let us continue to embody kindness, love, and respect—qualities that no machine can truly offer.

We must not allow AI to replace our capacity for critical thinking. Cognitive engagement and independent reasoning are foundational to human development. In a world where machines assist us, we must still reflect, question, and think deeply for ourselves.

From a diplomatic perspective, the most powerful tool has never been a gun, a knife, or even information—it has always been the pen. Whether in resolving conflict or formalizing progress, the pen remains the symbol of peace, negotiation, and growth.
